Jean has always liked Stachel, despite getting poisoned every time the Nidoking hugs him, and the feeling is clearly mutual. When Stachel showed up outside his tent, looking sad and lonely after Eren went back home, it was a very easy decision to add him to Jean's roster.
Really, thanks to Eren, Jean has gotten a couple of badass new additions. He'd never tell Eren that, though, even if he could.
